Citizenship test questions on work, the economy and social security
5 min readDiesen Ratgeber auf Deutsch lesen
There are 22 questions on work, the economy and the welfare state. The biggest block is social insurance: which insurances belong to it, who pays for it and what is deducted from your salary automatically? Add the social market economy, trade unions and works councils, dismissal and claims for unfair dismissal, the protection of pregnant employees, and a few everyday situations – from a faulty TV to a restaurant licence and taking the driving theory test in your own language. Study tip: watch out for similar-sounding terms, because that is exactly what the wrong answers exploit: statutory social insurance vs private life insurance, wage tax (Lohnsteuer, deducted from your pay) vs VAT (Umsatzsteuer, included in the price of what you buy), trade union (an association of employees) vs works council (elected inside your company), notice period vs a claim for unfair dismissal.
What you should know
- Germany's economic system is the social market economy: supply and demand drive the economy, and the state ensures social balance (question 171).
- Health, long-term care, pension and unemployment insurance are part of statutory social insurance (Sozialversicherung), life insurance is not – our citizenship test glossary explains the terms.
- Social insurance is financed through social security contributions paid jointly by employers and employees; if you are permanently employed, you pay in automatically.
- Wage tax (Lohnsteuer) and social insurance contributions are deducted from your salary – VAT (Umsatzsteuer) is not (question 285).
- Trade unions represent the interests of employees; within a company, the works council (Betriebsrat) helps employees with problems with their employer.
- If you want to resign you must observe the notice period (Kündigungsfrist); if you are wrongfully dismissed you can bring a claim for protection against dismissal (Kündigungsschutzklage) at the labour court.
- A pregnancy the employer knows about must not be a reason for dismissal.
- Most working people are employed by a company or public authority, and the best chance of a well-paid job goes to people who are well trained and keep learning after their training.
- The BIZ (career information centre) of the Federal Employment Agency helps you find an apprenticeship.
- You can make a complaint about (reklamieren) a new purchase that doesn't work; a restaurant needs a licence from the responsible authority (Gaststättenerlaubnis); and the driving theory test is available in more than ten languages.
